SUMMARY:Discussion with Jocelyn Sioui
DESCRIPTION:Les Productions de la Salle Comble present a discussion with Wendat author and storyteller Jocelyn Sioui on March 14 at Librairie L’Encre noire.\nJocelyn Sioui will be available to discuss his creative process, his stories, and his journey as a multidisciplinary artist. The event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. with refreshments.\nA valuable collaboration with the bookstore to highlight the connection between performing arts and literature.\nJocelyn Sioui (Biography): A storyteller, creator, and community builder, Jocelyn is a founding member of Belzébrute, a theatre band, and of the OUF! Festival Off Casteliers, a festival dedicated to emerging puppetry artists. He is one of the very few Indigenous puppeteers in Quebec. As an author, designer, and performer, his works have been enjoyed throughout Canada and France. The originality of his approach has earned him numerous distinctions, including the grand jury prize at the OFF/World Puppet Theatre Festival of Charleville-Mézières during Shavirez’s visit in 2013.\nMononk Jules, published by Éditions Hannenorak in 2020, marked Jocelyn’s first foray into the world of literature. The documentary performance of the same name won the Accès Culture prize at the 2021 Rideau Bursary. Since then, it has been presented over 100 times across Quebec and Canada.\nIn 2022, Jocelyn Sioui presented the story Frétillant et agile (Lively and Agile), published by Hannenorak, a tale that brings to life Auhaïtsic, an unlikely Wendat hero. Created in collaboration with two musicians, a sand artist, and a shadow puppeteer, this new show is currently touring Canada.\nIn 2024, he unveiled his first audio journey, SKAWANOTI, which retraces the history of the last Indigenous village on the banks of the river in Montreal’s Ahuntsic-Cartierville neighbourhood.\nIn September 2025, he published the novel Freshwater Fish with Hannenorak Publishers, a sequel to the short story “Frizzy and Agile.” This was followed by a children’s novel, Head Full of Leaves, also published by Hannenorak Publishers. Hybrid, mixed, and tinged with humor and fantasy, Jocelyn’s work, beneath its deceptively lighthearted surface, questions his origins and collective memory. He attempts to piece together the fragments of a hidden history.
