DOC Week – Family Farm
As the average age of Quebec farmers reaches 53, family farms face increasing pressure: sell or expand. On Range 5 in St-Louis-de-Gonzague, while their neighbors are abandoning dairy production, two brothers and their three sons, partners in the Montcalm et Frères farm, are investing $3 million in a new barn and state-of-the-art robots. This debt will be a heavy burden for them for the next few years. But they have no other choice if they want the next generation to be able to continue the work begun by their elders 100 years ago. *Family Farm* paints a human portrait of dairy production, the passing down of the family business between generations, the impact of modern values on rural life, and the uncertain future of this facet of our identity.
