Gaspé Peninsula – Important Women

The Blanche-Lamontagne Municipal Library is pleased to welcome renowned Gaspé historian Jean-Marie Thibeault for a lecture entitled “Women of the Gaspé – In Tribute to Them” on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m.

Half the world is made up of women! The Gaspé Peninsula is feminine! Yet, this isn’t always apparent. History speaks of Indigenous peoples, Jacques Cartier, Charles Robin, Théodore Jean Lamontagne, and so on. But who are these little-known women of the Gaspé? Like the ladies of the castles in the Middle Ages, they manage the estate and the finances while their husbands are away. They built the region.
Historian Jean-Marie Thibeault reminds us of this.
Jean-Marie Thibeault holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history from the University of Sherbrooke. He is a historian specializing in the history of the Gaspé Peninsula and taught at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine for 27 years. For the past 25 years, he has taught the History of the Gaspé Peninsula course. He is a commentator for Radio-Canada and has contributed to CIEU-FM, CHNC, Le Devoir, the magazine Gaspésie, GASPA Productions, and many others. In 2018, he was named the first professor emeritus at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles.
