Online Conference | A Brief History of Quebec Symbols
This conference offers an opportunity to reconnect with, or learn more about, the evolution and adoption of the many symbols of Quebec culture over the past five centuries through a historical overview: Indigenous heritage, flags, institutions, patriotic songs, the national anthem, the national motto, coats of arms (heraldry) and emblems (tree-like, floral, avian), toponymy, values, distinctive vocabulary, important figures, mythological figures (Louis Cyr, Jos Montferrand, Alexis le Trotteur) and contemporary heroes (Léo Major).
Since the Cultural Heritage Act, which came into force in October 2012 to replace the Cultural Property Act (1972), this has been supplemented by all the Quebec traditions that relate to “intangible cultural heritage” (ICH): tales and legends, music, recipes, traditional dances, know-how such as maple syrup production or the arrow sash, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, and so on!
Speaker: Jean-François Veilleux, historian, musician, professor (UQTR, Cégep de Victoriaville), author, researcher, columnist, and lecturer, passionately shares the keys to our collective memory.
